About River

River is an Deaf American Bulldog Mix who was taken to The Humane Society Of Elmore County simply because she could not hear. Luckily one of the staff took care of  her  until she found a home where she would have room to run and play. River was adopted and now  lives with the Holtville/Slapout Fire Chief and His Family in Deatsville, Alabama.

Because River is Deaf she has learned some signs to help her communicate with her family and friends. (sign language is for the deaf in which meaning is conveyed by hand signals) Knowing signs helps her to know when we want something, like" Sit, Lay, Come," and it lets her know when she has done something right. For example, clapping our hands tells her that she has been a Good Girl.  She also knows a sign for "No", just in case she feels like being silly and gets into trouble.

River loves to chase flashlights, laser lights or even the lights on the Fire Truck. She will run in circles and gets really dizzy trying to catch them. She also enjoys long walks, playing with the other family dogs, and being rubbed on her belly!

Most of all she loves to give BIG HUGS and KISSES to anyone who will let her!

River wants you to learn Fire Safety Tips that could save your life one day, so make sure you read the tips on this site and visit the website's listed on this page for much more information. (If it's okay with your parents)

Below is Stop Drop & Roll Information which River  learned from  Sparky The Fire Dog® and she really wants to make sure that you know it too.

Learn Not To Burn®
Activity Page

"Stop, Drop, Roll and Cool"

The Stop, Drop, Roll and Cool procedure should be used to extinguish flames and lessen burn injuries if your clothing catches fire. If your clothes catch fire:

STOP immediately where you are.
DROP to the ground.
ROLL over and over and over, covering your face and mouth with your hands (this will prevent flames from burning your face and smoke from entering your lungs). Roll over and over until the flames are extinguished.
COOL the burn with cool water for 10-15 minutes. Get help from a grown-up, and if needed, see a doctor.
