Fire Department History
The Holtville/Slapout Fire & Rescue Department is believed to have gotten
its start at the local High School. Holtville High School burned in 1925 and
was rebuilt in 1927. Shortly after the school was rebuilt the school started
a fire department. It is believed that some years later the dept disbanded.
The Department then
was re-organized in the early 50's. For the most part the Fire Department
was housed in a local store that had 1 bay. About 1974 the community built a
4 bay station and it is currently still in use. In the 80's we added on 2
more bays. It also doubles as poling place and community center.
Where did the name 'Slapout'
come from anyways?
The Name Slapout started out as a gimmick back in the 50's and early 60's.
there was a general store in town and it had all types of things you would
need in rural Alabama. As people would come in and try to buy things if he
didn't have what they were looking for he would say" I am slapout of it" and
it kinda stuck. Even though the area around town and the school was known as
Holtville it eventually became Holtville/Slapout.
The only other town that we can find with the Slapout name is in Slapout,
Oklahoma.
Holtville was named after the Holts that were prominent in the area. The
school Holtville was acclaimed nation wide in the 30's as a model school. It
was self-sufficient and required little or no funding from the state or
Federal Government. It had its on cannery and meat packing plant and used
the money to support the school. The school is on the Alabama Registry of
Historical Sites.
